How the Austrian price is set
Austria has been a bidding zone of its own since October 2018, when it was split from Germany. Because the interconnectors to Germany are often congested, the Austrian price can sit well above the German one, especially in the evening.
Smart meters are almost universal: at the end of 2024, 96.9% of metering points were equipped, according to the regulator E-Control. Spot tariffs pass the wholesale price on, plus a supplier margin, network charges that depend on the grid area, the renewables support contribution, the electricity levy and 20% VAT.
Our final price uses the per-kWh network usage and loss charges of the grid area you choose (Vienna by default) for households without power metering in 2026 – in Vienna 6.98 + 0.70 cents before VAT. From 1 April to 30 September the lower summer rate applies between 10:00 and 16:00 (5.58 cents in Vienna) for smart-meter readings, which a spot tariff requires anyway. On top come the renewables support contribution of 7.32%, the electricity levy – cut to 0.1 cents per kWh for households in 2026 – and a sample supplier margin of 1.5 cents. Fixed annual charges are not included.
