Is a dynamic tariff worth it for you in Hungary?

A household with a typical consumption profile (3,500 kWh a year, our sample assumption) would have paid HUF 50.7/kWh on average on a dynamic tariff in Hungary over the last twelve months (wholesale price) – 4.4% more than the average across all hours (HUF 48.5/kWh), because it uses a lot of electricity in the morning and evening, when prices are high.

Your own consumption tells you how you would fare: upload the quarter-hourly or hourly readings from your smart meter. The file is analysed in your browser only and never uploaded.

Common exports are recognised: date and time in one or two columns (or an hour number) and a column with kWh or Wh, separated by semicolons, commas or tabs. Quarter-hourly or hourly values, up to 400 days.

Month by month in Hungary: a typical household on a dynamic tariff

What our sample household (3,500 kWh a year, using more in the morning and evening than at night) would have paid per kWh each month on a dynamic tariff, compared with the plain average of all hours (wholesale price). Its daily rhythm cost the household most in October 2025 (HUF 4.1/kWh above the average); least in May 2026 (HUF 1.2/kWh above).

Calculated with the wholesale price – network charges, taxes and levies not included, so a comparison with a fixed price is only indicative.

What the calculator shows

On a dynamic tariff you pay the wholesale price of each quarter-hour plus fixed components. Whether that pays off depends on when you use electricity: households that use a lot at night, around midday or at weekends pay less than average; those that cook, wash and heat mainly in the early evening pay more.

The calculator lays your actual consumption over the actual prices of the same quarter-hours. The result is your personal average price – and the comparison with the average across all hours shows how well your load profile suits a dynamic tariff.

How to get more out of it

The biggest lever is large, flexible loads: an electric car, a heat pump, a hot-water tank, the washing machine and the dryer. Moving even a few kilowatt-hours a day into the cheapest hours lowers your average price noticeably. The appliance planner on the daily price page shows the best start times.

FAQ

Is my consumption data uploaded?
No. The file is read and analysed in your browser only. The page loads nothing but the public electricity prices for the period of your file from our server.
Which files work?
CSV exports with quarter-hourly or hourly values, as offered by grid operators, metering companies and suppliers. Date and time can be in one or two columns; values in kWh or Wh are recognised.
Are standing charges included?
No. Standing charges, metering fees and other fixed costs apply to every tariff in a similar way and do not depend on when you use electricity. Compare the unit price per kWh instead.
I don't have a smart meter – what now?
Without quarter-hourly or hourly readings your personal profile cannot be calculated. The sample profile shows how a typical household fares.
