What households on universal service pay
Most Hungarian households buy electricity at regulated prices. On the A1 tariff the price is about HUF 36.4 per kWh up to 2,523 kWh a year (210 kWh a month on average) and about HUF 70.1 above that, both including network charges and 27% VAT (2025 regulated prices; network charges unchanged in 2026).
MVM's dynamic “D” tariff prices consumption above the band at the HUPX quarter-hour price, converted at the central bank's mid rate, plus a supplier fee; billing can start on 1 January 2027 at the earliest. This page shows the same quarter-hour wholesale price, without network charges, taxes and supplier fee.

How the Hungarian price is set
Hungary is a single bidding zone; its power exchange HUPX is coupled with the rest of Europe, with 96 quarter-hour prices per day since 1 October 2025. Fast-growing solar output often pushes midday prices very low, while evening prices tend to be among the highest in the region because Hungary relies on imports for a large share of its demand.
Most households buy electricity under the regulated universal-service tariff, so quarter-hour price swings do not show up directly on their bills. The exchange price still shows when power is plentiful or scarce, and it is the basis for exchange-indexed contracts.
